From your personality traits to your fingerprints, one thing is consistent: you are a unique individual. You have your own needs, wants and overarching beliefs. This is meant to illustrate that the same way we look at people and know what they need isn’t a one-size-fits-all, it’s also appropriate to see your hair in the same light.
Every kink, curl, coil and wave is different to the next person’s. By following someone else’s routine and not truly studying your own hair’s condition, you’re confining yourself to frustration and misunderstanding. The same way that someone with oily skin won’t follow the same routine as someone with dry skin, you must follow what best suits your own hair circumstances.
Let’s say you have high hair porosity (moisture isn’t easily retained) and on the finer ends of the spectrum. You may find retaining moisture to be difficult and may deal with dryness – and so following the routine of someone who has low hair porosity (moisture is easily trapped) and uses thinner oils may be counterproductive. This isn’t to say you can never take inspiration – you may in fact share hair types or hair concerns with someone and may decide to incorporate their remedies into your routine, though it should be noted that the best source of comparison is yourself.
By going to a hair stylist or someone who is knowledgeable about afro hair, you essentially can tailor a routine that works impeccably for you and you alone. If you’re going to use someone else as reference, at the very least make sure they share the same hair ailments (dryness, damage etc.) and have the same or similar hair type as this will generally yield the best results.
