It’s very easy to go-back-to-back with wigs, weaves, extensions and tight hairstyles, as their styling lasts. However, going extended periods of time without true management of your own hair and constantly sealing it beneath wig caps can be more detrimental than originally thought.
It can build up tension, as the hair is constantly being manipulated and can lead to thinning edges and breakage. Moreover, scalp ventilation is crucial in scalp health – the scalp doesn’t breathe in the typical sense, rather, it requires oxygen to maintain its function. When you neglect it, build up ensues, consisting of dead skin, sebum and hair products. This can lead to a surge in bacterial growth on the scalp as well as inflammation of the hair follicles – Discomfort and itching are also often symptoms of the latter. In addition, when your hair is consistently in tighter hairstyles, it creates stress on the scalp, which in the worst cases, can lead to hair loss.
So, what are the benefits of taking breaks in-between?
One of them is better product absorption. When it’s not clogged with buildup and it’s adequately oxygenated, products can penetrate the scalp deeper and promote excellent levels of healthy hair. Enhanced blood circulation to the follicles is another – which in turns promotes better growth quality and hair strength. Comfort and ease also tend to follow, as the scalp isn’t constantly under stress and tension, and is allowed a break from the hairstyling process.
So whilst hair isn’t “breathing” in the conventional sense, it still requires oxygen to execute its function proficiently and we can definitely assist in the growth process by giving it just that extra boost.
