Whilst you can and should ultimately wear your hair whichever way you wish, regardless of the season, we’ve found that some hair styles are naturally optimised for certain weathers and can give you both practicality and style. Here’s our pick of just a few you can rock.

Summer

As it gets really hot and humid, it’s a great idea to let your hair breathe so as to not overheat, and go for your natural ‘fro, as the humidity works in tandem with the hair and keeps it flexible. Afro puffs are also a great choice (especially helpful as they keep your hair out of your face in the heat). Twist outs and wash n’ gos also allow the hair to naturally thrive and breathe.

Winter

During the winter, protective styles are ideal as with the cold, afro hair tends to dry up quicker and dry hair can naturally lead to brittleness and fragility. As such, braided styles like cornrows and Fulani braids can help preserve moisture in the chilly weather, keeping the hair soft and properly coated. Buns, updos and Bantu knows are also fantastic choices as they too stop the hair from drying out.

Both

Box braids are a brilliant choice for both summer and winter – they help keep the hair out of the face and let the scalp breathe, but then they also are a protective style and can be low-manipulation if the style isn’t changed too soon. Mini twists, as well as faux locs are also beautiful choices – they lock moisture in well (winter) and also don’t overly trap heat in the summer.

As stated earlier, hair boils down to preference and you have the first and final say in how your hair is styled – these are simply suggestions if you’d like to know which hairstyles are optimised for what.
