Yes – to many, hair brushing is a normal part of life that you do as easily as you breathe. However, not everyone begins on the same block, and so just to ensure everyone is well-equipped with the basics, this article is dedicated to hair brushing when it comes to coily hair textures.
Firstly, hair brushing is best done when the hair is either wet, or well-moisturised. This is because brushing with dry hair causes the comb to snag against the curlier strands, which tend to be “S” shaped, “Z” shaped or even kinkier. Having the hair lathed in oil, butter, a conditioner or shampoo, allows the combing process to go a lot more smoothly, without tugging against the natural curl pattern.
Now onto the combs. Wide-tooth combs are recommended, as they brush the hair as a collective and don’t tend to pull as much. Finer, small combs (like a rat-tail) are best when working in small sections for a particular hairstyle, rather than casual use. Afro picks are definitely an excellent choice -and the first choice to many- as they detangle hair amazingly without breaking hair.
So when it comes to actual brushing, hair is best brushed from ends to root, as opposed to the other way round. This is because going from the root and working downwards can cause the hair to become lodged and rip hair strands out in the process. By combing hair from the ends however, you’re ensuring there’s no pain, and that the hair doesn’t knot whilst it’s being brushed.
When you blend all three of these together, you can create a beautiful brushing experience with the best results and minimal effort. Make sure you do these with every session, and the results will surely show.
